Avondale 16 - Croydon 6 (Thameside 26 Jan 2009)

The Thameside league does not command the same kudos as the London Premiership or Surrey First division and both teams were without notable players. Significantly, Avondale did have both of their 'sharp shooters' and in the end this was the difference between the teams.

Croydon scored first, the Avondale team guilty of assuming that the old buoy at the back was equal to whatever the home teams best shooters had to offer. But from there on, one might say that normal service was resumed. As the game continued the Croydon shooting regressed to a more manageable level and Bond and The Sniper seemed to go from strength to strength. The normally very competent Croydon keeper struggled to put up much resistance. Given the quality of the incoming fire he ought not to be too disappointed.

For the visitors, Eakins drew on all his experience and guile to lob the keeper from a melee right under his nose, whilst Pink Andy Parkin had a rather frustrating time in the pit. Dave "It's all about deception in 2009" Brooks picked up his usual couple of majors, although the consensus in the crowd was that he was unlucky with the first of these as the player looked to be holding the ball throughout their engagement. Dave knows you have to take the rough with the smooth, and hailing from Yorkshire is a lot more used to the rough. He left away with a smile on his face.

Bule Marlins 8 - Avondale II 8 (Thameside 15 Jan 2009)

No match report was forthcoming from this, clearly, close fought engcounter. A surprising result given the one sided affair between the same teams three days earlier at Putney. However, a second hand account reached the editor across a pub table:

Opinion as to the suitability of the pool for competitive polo seems to be pretty unanimous - ranking, as it does, somewhere below the chocolate fire-guard for efficacy. Opinion as to the refereeing was divided, some thought that with the vast majority of the major fouls, the visitors attracted an unwarranted degree of censure from the official. Others seemed to think that he was equally competent in his decision making for both teams. Whatever the opinion, by the end of the game Avondale had three players excluded from the pool, leaving them a player down and this certainly resulted in a more even game.

One particular incident (excluding the continual references, which littered the discussion, to the visiting Captain's complete inability to shoot within the confines of the goal) was recounted by all of the participants. Avondale were without their main keeper and, presumably on the basis that quantity is every bit as valuable as quality in this position (although Otto was playing) Tim "combine harvester" Langton found himself as the last line of defence. Whilst remonstrating volubly and stridently with his defence as to the need to "press" their opponents he failed to notice that the ball was already in the goal..... Easily done!

Avondale II 16 - Bule Marlins 6 (Tom Dwyer Cup Round 1 - 12 Jan 2009)

In the end, this was a rather one-sided affair where the handicap (four goals to Blue Marlins) was not enough on the night to turn it into a competitive match. However it was a good natured game and one has to do something to build up a thirst for the post match beer. MVP for the home team was the ever reliable Focco. He was in top form, bagging several good goals and some dexterous defending... their next opposition need to make sure they nobble him early on!

Avondale II now meet Avondale I in the next round, scheduled for Putney on Monday 2nd March.

Killer - 2009

There was no stopping The King tonight. One of the pre match favourites fell at the first hurdle; Pink Parkin watched mesmerised and flapped his arms pathetically as three successive shots flew to the corners. There were some very tight interpretations of the 'no baulking' rule and, as usual controversy surrounded the exodus of King Louis. Titanium Pete stopped a couple in the stand off, but in the end ... speed kills!

Monday 5th Jan 2009 - Winner S Moorhouse - runner up MKB

Worthy of mention is Steve "who's the daddy" Moorhouse for his victory in the pre-season Killerfest (seven lives!!) at Putney on Monday 5th Jan. Whilst the event was not officially sanctioned by sport's governing body FISK (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Killer) the competition was very well attended and produced some of the most consistent and high calibre shooting that anyone can remember. MKB's not The Daddy now!
